Located on top of a plateau, which is abruptly ended by a sloped edge, the strong topographical element of the Riethüsli Primary School leads to a severe breaking point between the site and its surrounding context. Designed by MPP Architekten, the aim of the concept is to let the school act as an urban communicator. More images and architects’ description after the break.
A wide stair overcomes the slope and leads into a long one story high connecting building, which establishes a public covered walkway. The school, the kindergarten, and the sports hall are placed alongside this backbone-like structure. The sports hall is placed at the edge of the slope, oriented towards the city, enacting as a strong urban sign. Towards south the complex opens up to the green fields of the site. The open spaces reach in between the buildings right until their connecting backbone.
All buildings have an advantageous ratio of volume and surface to ensure the low energy level. Non load-bearing walls and a regular façade grid support future flexibility in use. Solar panels for warm water production and an artificial air supply system as well as the use of recycled concrete, wood and glass comply with the Minergie-P eco goal.
